Sun-tracking blinds: skip tiny slat changes and match the real slat angle

The sun smart rule would skip slat and position changes below a limit you set, and the slat angle of exterior venetian blinds would follow their real, uneven slat movement instead of a straight run time.

Why and how you would use it

When blinds follow the sun, the smart rule sends every new slat angle, also a change of 2 or 3 %. Such a small step often does not turn the slats at all, and after many of them the real slats are somewhere else than the app shows.

On top of that, a TapHome blinds module turns the slat angle into motor run time in a straight line. Exterior venetian blinds turn their slats unevenly: little change near closed and open, a lot around the middle. The same 5 % step can be invisible at one end and large in the middle.

Ten taps. How much turn?

Each section is one +10% tap. Its width is the real turn.

What will be possible

We are evaluating this idea. Nothing is scheduled yet.

  • Minimum change. The sun smart rule would get a setting such as “Ignore slat changes smaller than 10 %”, and the same for the blind position.
  • Slat angle that matches the real slats. In the service settings of a blind you would mark a few points of the real slat movement, for example where the slats are horizontal. 50 % would then look like half of the real angle.

What will not be possible

  • Measuring the real slat angle. There is no sensor on the slats, so the result is only as good as the calibration.
  • A new calibration wizard. Calibration stays as it is.

How to solve it today

  • A longer change interval, so the blinds move less often and by larger steps.
  • Slat angle tables with larger steps between sun elevations.
  • The motor start time from step 1 of the calibration wizard, so small steps move the slats more reliably.
