Matter versions of TapHome devices: add them directly to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa

Should TapHome sensors, switches or small modules also come as Matter devices that you add to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa directly, without a Core?

Two paths to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa: a TapHome device that is a Matter device itself over Thread or Wi-Fi, and bus modules that go over RS-485 to TapHome and then through a Matter bridge.

Why and how you would use it

Some projects have no bus cable in a room, and some clients only want one sensor or one switch in an apartment. For them a TapHome device that is a Matter device itself would be simpler: the client adds it to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, and it works there.

An example: a renovated flat where the walls stay closed. You would like a temperature and humidity sensor in the bedroom and a switch by the bed. Pulling a bus cable is not an option, and a Core may be more than the client wants.

This idea is different from the Matter bridge. The bridge publishes devices that already sit on the TapHome bus. Here we ask about TapHome devices that would speak Matter directly.

Three possible TapHome devices, a battery sensor, a wall switch and a DIN module, could connect over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet and appear through Matter in Apple Home.

The three networks are alternatives we are comparing. A device may use one of them, and we do not yet know which.

What will be possible

This idea is under review. We are collecting interest, and nothing below is decided: which devices, which network and whether to go for certification at all.

  • Candidate devices. Sensors, wall switches and controllers, or small modules for rooms without bus wiring. Which of them first is the question of the poll below.
  • Direct add to an ecosystem. The device would be added in Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa like any other Matter device, with no Core in between.
  • Candidate networks. Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Each has a different use: Thread suits small battery sensors, Wi-Fi is easy in a flat, Ethernet suits a DIN rail module.
  • Possibly together with TapHome. Whether such a device could also be used by a Core is open too.

What will not be possible

  • Bus devices becoming Matter devices. The TapHome modules and switches you can buy today stay on the bus. An update cannot turn them into Matter devices, because Matter runs over an IP network.
  • A Matter device replacing the whole system. A single Matter device would not bring the TapHome logic: smart rules, schedulers, scenes and the access management stay with the Core.
  • Every TapHome feature in every ecosystem. Matter describes standard device types, so each ecosystem shows only what it supports.
  • A free choice of network for every device. A battery sensor and a DIN module have different needs, so one device would not support Thread, Wi-Fi and Ethernet at once by default.
  • Certification for free. Matter certification is a separate process for each product, and it is one of the things we weigh.

How to solve it today

TapHome bus modules are connected to a Core, which has 3 bus ports and a LAN port. Selected devices can then be exposed to other systems in Settings → Expose Devices. See Expose Devices.

  • Amazon Alexa. Enable the TapHome skill and expose the devices you want. See TapHome to Amazon Alexa.
  • Home Assistant. Bring exposed devices into Home Assistant through the integration, which can pass them on to other systems. See Home Assistant integration.
  • TapHome API. Any third-party application can control exposed devices over the REST API. See TapHome API.
  • Matter bridge. A Core that publishes its devices to Apple Home, Google Home and others is a separate idea, see Matter bridge.
  • Wireless devices from other makers. Some third-party devices can already be used in TapHome, for example a Shelly 1PM Gen3 switch.
