Matter appliances, media players and cameras in TapHome
Not planned: TapHome's Matter support leaves out appliances, media players, cameras and video doorbells. Use Onvif cameras, SIP doorbells and smart rules instead.
How to solve it today
Why and how you would use it
Matter is a common standard, and its device list is long. It includes fridges, washers, ovens, robot vacuums, media players, cameras, video doorbells and intercoms. Some owners ask whether TapHome could show all of them in one app.
TapHome is a control system for the building: lighting, heating, blinds, energy and access. Appliances and media players already have their own apps from their makers, and Matter carries only a small part of what those apps do. Matter 1.5 does define cameras with a live video stream, but TapHome receives video through Onvif and SIP and does not plan Matter cameras.
| Today | Matter in TapHome | |
|---|---|---|
| Camera video | Onvif IP cameras | Not planned |
| Video doorbell | SIP doorbells | Not planned |
| Washer finished | Power meter, smart rule | Not planned |
| Fridge, oven, vacuum | Maker’s own app | Not planned |
What will be possible
This idea is not planned. The Matter support described in Matter controller and Thread Border Router covers the devices that a building control system works with:
- Lights, plugs and switches, window coverings, thermostats, fans and valves, locks, and sensors.
What will not be possible
- Appliance control from TapHome through Matter: fridges, washers, dishwashers, dryers, ovens, microwaves, cooktops, hoods and robot vacuums.
- Media players and casting.
- Cameras, video doorbells, intercoms and chimes over Matter.
How to solve it today
- Cameras. The TapHome app plays live video from IP cameras that support the Onvif protocol. TapHome does not record video, see requirements.
- Video doorbells. Doorbells with SIP give ring notifications, two-way audio and video in the app, see SIP Video Doorbell.
- Washer, dryer or dishwasher state. Put a power meter on the appliance circuit. A Condition smart rule with a trigger on the power falling below a limit can send a push notification when the cycle ends. See Condition and triggers.
- Everything else. Use the maker’s own app next to TapHome.
