Protect Blinds from Wind
The Protect Blinds from Wind smart rule automatically moves your motorized blinds to a safe position when wind speed exceeds a threshold. It monitors a wind speed sensor and reacts by closing or adjusting your blinds to prevent damage.
Two independent protection modes are available — strong wind and mild wind — each with its own threshold and action. You can enable one or both, depending on how you want to respond to different wind conditions.
Getting started
Setting up wind protection takes three steps:
- Add blinds — select the blinds you want to protect.
- Add a wind speed sensor
- Configure protection — set thresholds and actions for strong wind, mild wind, or both.
Basic example
You have motorized exterior blinds and a wind speed sensor on your roof. You want the blinds to close automatically when the wind gets strong.
- Create a new Protect Blinds from Wind smart rule.
- In the Blinds to be protected section, tap Add blinds and select your blinds.
- In the Wind speed sensor section, select your wind speed sensor. If you only have one wind speed sensor, it is selected automatically.
- In the Protect blinds from strong wind section, leave the threshold at 80 km/h and the default action (blinds fully closed).
- Tap Save.
Your blinds now close automatically when wind speed reaches 80 km/h and return to normal 15 minutes after the wind calms down.
Blinds to be protected
Tap Add blinds to select one or more blinds. All configured wind protection actions apply to every blind in the list — you cannot assign different actions to individual blinds within a single smart rule.
If you need different protection actions for different blinds, create separate Protect Blinds from Wind smart rules — one per group of blinds that share the same settings.
Wind speed sensor
Tap Add new sensor to choose from your available wind speed sensors.
The sensor is required for wind protection to work. Without a sensor, the smart rule cannot detect the wind and no protection actions are triggered.
If the wind speed sensor becomes unreachable (communication lost, device offline), the smart rule cannot determine the current wind speed. New wind protection cannot trigger, and any active protection will eventually expire through the normal grace period.
When a sensor is selected, the wind speed sliders show the current wind speed reading alongside the threshold value, so you can see at a glance how the current conditions compare to your configured thresholds.
Protection modes
You can enable one or both protection modes. At least one must always be active — the app prevents you from disabling the last remaining mode.
| Mode | Detection | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Strong wind | Instant — triggers immediately when wind speed reaches the threshold | High-priority safety action — overrides other smart rules controlling the same blinds |
| Mild wind | Gradual — uses a time-buffered history to confirm sustained wind before triggering | Standard-priority action — normal smart rule priority |
When both modes are enabled and both thresholds are exceeded simultaneously, strong wind protection takes priority.
Protect blinds from strong wind
Wind speed threshold
The wind speed threshold for strong wind protection. When the current wind speed reaches or exceeds this value, the smart rule immediately executes the configured action.
| Parameter | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| When wind speed is higher than | 0–80 km/h | 80 km/h |
Action
The action to execute on your blinds when strong wind is detected. Tap Set action to choose the blind position — typically fully closed (level 100%) to protect the mechanism.
Strong wind actions are applied with safety priority, meaning they override other smart rules that might be controlling the same blinds. This ensures wind protection takes precedence over comfort or energy-saving rules.
Adjust blinds on windy conditions
Mild wind protection is designed for sustained moderate wind that may not be immediately dangerous but could cause damage over time.
Wind speed threshold
The wind speed threshold for mild wind detection. Unlike strong wind, the smart rule only reacts to sustained wind above the threshold — how long the wind must persist for the smart rule to trigger depends on the configured sensitivity.
| Parameter | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| When wind speed is higher than | 0–80 km/h | 55 km/h |
Sensitivity
How long it takes until the blinds are sent to safe position since the first signs of mild windThe sensitivity controls how quickly the smart rule reacts to mild wind. A higher sensitivity means faster reaction but also a higher chance of triggering on brief gusts.
| Setting | Reaction time | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Low | ~20 minutes | Requires 10 out of the last 20 minutes above the threshold |
| Medium | ~10 minutes | Requires 5 out of the last 10 minutes above the threshold |
| High | ~5 minutes | Requires 3 out of the last 5 minutes above the threshold |
| Immediate | Instant | Triggers as soon as wind speed reaches or exceeds the threshold |
The default is Medium, which balances responsiveness with false-alarm prevention.
Use Low sensitivity in locations with frequent brief gusts that are not dangerous. Use High or Immediate for fragile or exposed blinds where even short periods of moderate wind could cause damage.
Action
The action to execute on your blinds when mild wind is detected. Tap Set action to choose the blind position — for example, tilting the slats to a partially closed angle.
Mild wind actions are applied with standard priority, meaning other high-priority rules can override them.
Duration
After wind drops below the configured threshold, the smart rule does not immediately release the blinds. Instead, it waits for the configured duration to make sure the wind has truly calmed down before returning the blinds to normal operation.
This grace period applies to both strong and mild wind protection independently.
| Parameter | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Return back to normal after | 1 minute and above | 15 minutes |
Do not disturb at night
When enabled, the smart rule keeps your blinds in their protected (safe) position during the night hours — even if the wind has calmed down. This prevents the blinds from moving back to their normal position in the middle of the night, which could be noisy or unnecessary.
The night exception works as an extension of the back-to-normal grace period. If wind protection was active and the grace period expires during the night window, the blinds stay protected until the night window ends. If the wind calms down and the grace period expires before the night window starts, the blinds return to normal as usual.
| Parameter | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Night window start | 20:00–10:00 (whole hours) | 22:00 |
| Night window end | 20:00–10:00 (whole hours) | 07:00 |
The night exception is enabled by default. If you prefer the blinds to return to normal as soon as the grace period expires regardless of the time of day, disable this option.
Examples and scenarios
Basic wind protection for exterior blinds
Goal: Protect exterior blinds from strong wind gusts by closing them fully.
Configuration:
- Blinds to be protected: all exterior blinds (living room, bedroom, kitchen)
- Wind speed sensor: roof-mounted anemometer
- Protect blinds from strong wind: enabled (default)
- When wind speed is higher than: 60 km/h
- Set action: close blinds fully (level 100%)
- Adjust blinds on windy conditions: disabled — not needed here; a single threshold is enough for sturdy exterior blinds
- Return back to normal after: 15 minutes (default)
- Do not disturb at night: enabled (default), 22:00–07:00
Behavior: When wind reaches 60 km/h, all three blinds close immediately with safety priority — overriding any other smart rules controlling these blinds. After the wind drops below 60 km/h, the blinds stay closed for 15 more minutes. If this happens at 23:00, the blinds remain closed until 07:00 the next morning thanks to the night exception.
Two-level protection for delicate blinds
Goal: Tilt delicate blinds on moderate wind and close them fully on strong wind.
Configuration:
- Blinds to be protected: conservatory blinds
- Wind speed sensor: garden weather station
- Protect blinds from strong wind: enabled
- When wind speed is higher than: 50 km/h
- Set action: close blinds fully (level 100%)
- Adjust blinds on windy conditions: enabled
- When wind speed is higher than: 30 km/h
- Sensitivity: High
- Set action: tilt slats to 45 degrees (slope 50%)
- Return back to normal after: 20 minutes
- Do not disturb at night: enabled, 21:00–08:00
Behavior: When sustained wind above 30 km/h is detected for approximately 5 minutes (high sensitivity), the blinds tilt to 45 degrees. If wind intensifies to 50 km/h, the blinds close fully with safety priority, overriding the mild wind action. When wind calms down, the blinds stay protected for 20 minutes before returning to normal. If wind calms at night, the blinds stay protected until 08:00.
How wind protection works
Strong wind detection
Strong wind detection is instantaneous and stateless. Each time the wind speed sensor reports a new value, the smart rule compares it directly against the strong wind threshold. If the value equals or exceeds the threshold, the smart rule immediately executes the configured action with safety priority.
When the wind drops below the threshold, the smart rule transitions into a grace period (Return back to normal after). During this period, the blinds remain in the protected position. If the wind picks up again during this period, the grace period timer resets.
Mild wind detection
Mild wind detection uses a time-buffered approach. The smart rule maintains a history of wind speed readings — one value per minute, up to 30 minutes of history. Each minute, the smart rule checks whether enough readings in the recent history exceed the mild wind threshold, based on the configured Sensitivity.
For example, with Medium sensitivity, the smart rule looks at the last 10 minutes and requires at least 5 readings above the threshold before triggering. This prevents brief gusts from causing unnecessary blind movement.
The Immediate setting bypasses the history entirely and compares only the current wind speed against the threshold — similar to strong wind, but with standard priority instead of safety priority.
Priority between modes
When both protection modes are enabled and active simultaneously, strong wind always takes priority. The overall protection status is determined by the highest priority mode that is currently active:
- Strong wind active (wind currently above threshold) — highest priority, safety mode
- Strong wind grace period (wind dropped, waiting to return to normal) — standard priority
- Mild wind active or grace period — standard priority
If strong wind protection is active and then the wind drops into the mild range, the smart rule may transition from strong wind grace period to mild wind protection — keeping the blinds protected but with the mild wind action instead.
Night exception behavior
The night exception extends the back-to-normal grace period through the night. Here is how it interacts with wind protection:
- Wind triggers protection (strong or mild).
- Wind calms down — the grace period starts.
- If the grace period expires during the night window: the blinds stay protected until the night window ends.
- When the night window ends: the blinds return to normal (unless the wind has picked up again).
