Default Values and Manual Override

Since version 2026.1

When a smart rule stops controlling a device, its Default values decide what happens: the device stays as it is, changes to a value you set, or returns to the last value from a manual change.

All devices have their Default values set to Do not change until you change them — lights and blinds too. A light that the automation turned on therefore stays on after the automation ends. To make it turn off, choose Set to value for the light and enter 0%.

Who controls the device

Each value type of a device — state, brightness, blind position, slat angle — is decided separately, in this order:

  1. Safety mode — a smart rule action in Safety mode overrides everything else.
  2. A manual change from the app or directly on the device — switches the value type to manual mode; manual override determines when the automation may change it again.
  3. Smart rule actions by priority — a higher smart rule that holds the value wins, and a lower one may change only the value types that the higher one does not hold. This also applies to an action in Manual mode, such as a push button: when a smart rule with a higher priority holds the value type, the action is not applied. The priority is set by the order in the device’s detail, in the Affected by section; you change it with the Edit button.
  4. Default values — when no one holds the value type.

That is why, when you tilt the slats manually, only the slats switch to manual mode, while the smart rule keeps controlling the blind position. A manual change of the position switches the slats to manual mode too.

Default values

You set them in the device’s detail with the Default values row, which is always the last one in the Affected by section; only a user who may edit the device’s service settings can change them. For a device with several value types, the dialog first offers one option for all of them, until you tap Show more to split them by value type.

In the chart, grey lanes show what controls the light (dot = manual change, bar = the time a smart rule holds it), and blue lanes show the brightness of the light with each of the three options; the lane height is 0–100%. The time axis is not to scale.

  1. A manual change sets the brightness to 40%.
  2. A new smart rule action ends manual mode, because by default the manual override of lights is set to Keep manual mode until next automatic change.
  3. The smart rule releases the light. Do not change writes nothing: the light stays on in automatic mode. With Set to value, the light shows the Default value mode. Last manual value restores 40% as a manual change: the light switches to manual mode, and manual override applies to it, including its time. If there has been no manual change yet, it writes nothing.

A default value is applied when no smart rule holds the value type, that is, when the smart rule has released the device (none of its triggers applies), has been disabled (for all devices or only for this one), is blocked by a limiting condition, has been deleted, or has sent only a one-time action, which does not hold the value. A default value does not end manual mode — it is applied only once manual mode ends according to manual override, or once a smart rule switches the device to automatic mode, for example Automatic Turn Off in the Light Controller smart rule; with the Keep manual mode until ended by user option, the smart rule cannot do that. That is why a default value of 0% does not by itself turn off a light that was turned on manually or with a push button in the Condition smart rule.

The Keep default values smart rule is a different mechanism: an ordinary automatic smart rule that holds the values, so while it runs, the device’s default values are not applied.

Manual override

A manual change is a change from the app, directly on the device (for example with its own switch), from outside through exposed devices (for example KNX, Modbus or Alexa), and a smart rule action in Manual mode. Push buttons work in this mode by default: a short or long press in the Light Controller and Control blinds with push buttons smart rules, and in the Condition smart rule with a button press trigger. You change the mode of an action with the Select mode option on the action page, where the app offers it (for example in the Condition smart rule); the built-in actions of push buttons have a fixed mode.

What the automation may do after a manual change is set in the device’s detail with the Manual override button in the bottom bar:

  • Keep manual mode for a limited time — when the time runs out, all value types of the device return to automatic mode at once.
  • Keep manual mode for a limited time and then until next automatic change — after the time runs out, manual mode continues as with the next option.
  • Keep manual mode until next automatic change — only a new smart rule action ends manual mode. A smart rule that holds the value with the same action as before the manual change does not end it, and neither does a smart rule with a lower priority while a higher one holds the value.
  • Keep manual mode until ended by user — even the smart rule action Set operation mode to A is rejected.
  • Overriding automatic mode or default value is disabled — rejects a manual change, push buttons included, not only when a smart rule holds the value type, but also when the value type has the default value Set to value.
  • Do not allow manual mode — also rejects push buttons and the Last manual value option; a device that is in manual mode at that moment switches to automatic mode once you save the option.

A device without this setting has Keep manual mode until next automatic change. When you add a virtual device or change the device type, the app pre-fills the option by type — for example, a circulation pump gets Keep manual mode for a limited time with a time of 15 minutes.

The manual override setting and its time are shared by all value types of the device. When manual mode ends, the device is taken over by the smart rule that holds it, otherwise by its Default values.

Disabling a smart rule for one device

In the device’s detail, in the Affected by section, tap the three dots next to the smart rule and select Disable on this device. The item is offered only when the smart rule is enabled and you are allowed to edit it; Disable in the same menu disables the smart rule for all devices.

The smart rule row then shows the status Disabled on this device, and you enable the smart rule again with the Enable on this device item.

Safety mode

An action works in safety mode when you choose Safety for it with the Select mode option. The Protect blinds from wind smart rule uses it by itself while the wind speed exceeds the strong wind threshold; once the wind speed no longer exceeds it, the smart rule works in automatic mode. A device in safety mode shows the Safety mode, and neither a manual change nor a default value can override it. When safety mode ends, the device is taken over by the highest smart rule that holds it, otherwise by its Default values.

If safety mode ends while manual mode is still in effect (the manual override time keeps running during safety mode too), the device stays in manual mode with the safety value — the value of the manual change is not restored.
