Custom Device Icons
How to pick a device icon, change its appearance, color and background, and add an overlay
Where to set the icon
Open the Service settings of the device.
- Digital output and Reed Contact have two icons, Icon for "On" and Icon for "Off".
- Analog output has one Icon row. The picker offers only icons that draw a level, and the icon shows the current value of the output.
- Push button and Variable have one Icon row, and the icon does not change.
- Multi-Value Switch and Multi-State Sensor have an icon for each value: tap the value in the Values section.
- Blind and Awning have no icon to set. Their icon shows the position, and for a blind also the slat angle. Thermostat and RGB Light have no icon to pick: the thermostat’s icon shows the set temperature, the RGB light’s icon its color and brightness. Temperature sensor, Analog input and Electric meter get their icon from the device type.
Choosing the Device type in the Attributes section sets the icons by type – for a multi-value switch the icons of all values – and overwrites the icons you have already set, so pick the type before the icons. It also overwrites other properties that the type determines, for example the names of states and values, the minimum and maximum of a dimmer and Negate state of a reed contact. For an awning, the type determines the icon the app draws, for example a curtain or a Mix valve.

Appearance
Default has the theme color of the app, Black and white is black (white in dark mode) and Accent color has a palette color independent of the theme; the Accent color row with the palette is there only with this appearance. Off dims the icon, but some icons, such as a lock or a door, have their own artwork for the off state .
Without a background, some icons do not offer the Accent color or Off appearance. With a background all four are available.
Background
With a background, the Off appearance always uses the artwork of the on state, for example the lock .
Picking an icon
Picking a different icon resets the appearance and background and removes the overlay, so pick the icon first.
Text and emoji
Pick a preset from the Text (editable) section and change it in the Text row to your own text or emoji.
The text has at most 5 characters including spaces, and a multi-part emoji (a family, a flag) counts as one character. Without a background the app offers only Black and white and Off for a color emoji, so keep the circle background.
Overlay
An overlay is a second icon drawn over the device icon, for example a number that tells two identical devices apart. It comes from the same catalog, text and emoji included, and an icon has at most one.
- Background – in a corner without a background, the lines of the overlay overlap the icon underneath.
- Position – in a corner the overlay is half the size, in the center full size.
The badges for an error, a warning or manual mode in the top right corner of a device tile are drawn by the app according to the device state and have nothing to do with the overlay.
