# Modbus Integration

## What is Modbus?

Modbus is a widely-used industrial communication protocol for connecting devices like electric meters, inverters, heat pumps or air recovery units. TapHome supports two variants:

- **Modbus RTU** — wired connection via RS485 bus (BUS 1, BUS 2 or BUS 3 terminals on the controller)
- **Modbus TCP** — connection via ethernet or WiFi using the device's IP address

## Using Ready-Made Templates

The fastest way to connect a Modbus device is to use a pre-configured template from the compatibility list. Templates define all necessary registers, data types and device mappings — no manual register mapping needed.

1. Go to **Settings → Hardware → Add new interface → Modbus RTU / Modbus TCP**
2. Select **Modbus RTU** or **Modbus TCP**
3. Choose a template for your device
4. Enter the connection details (bus terminal or IP address) and confirm

Browse the available Modbus templates below.

## Custom Modbus Integration

If your device is not in the template list, you can configure it manually through **Settings → Hardware**. Define the Modbus interface, set communication parameters (baud rate, parity for RTU; TCP port for TCP), and map individual device registers.

> You will need the device's Modbus register map — usually available in the manufacturer's documentation.
